Health Insurance

Is health care required? What is the penalty for not having coverage? Is my employer required to provide health insurance? Health care has been all over the map recently and most people don’t know which direction to go. While there is still much to sort out in the way of the Affordable Care Act, it is important to obtain coverage for yourself. An injury or illness in the absence of a health insurance policy can cause severe financial hardship up to and including bankruptcy. Not having health insurance is one of the leading causes for bankruptcy in the United States. Traditionally not being a required coverage it is often overlooked. You cannot control everything that life might throw at you but you can be prepared.

Health insurance comes in a few basic forms: PPO, HMO, HDHP, Individual v. Small Group

Please note, you can only apply for health coverage during the Open Enrollment period for the upcoming year (November 15, 2014 through February 15, 2015), unless you meet one of these Qualifying Events. During Open Enrollment coverage will start as follows:

  • Between the 1st and 15th days of the month, your coverage starts the first day of the next month.
  • Between the 16th and the last day of the month, your coverage starts the first day of the second following month. So if you enroll on January 16, your coverage starts on March 1.
